## Better than it has any right to be

I own a lot of headphones, including models that are vastly more expensive and technically more capable than the Porta Pro Utility. So I bought this partly out of curiosity and partly out of nostalgia. I remember inexpensive Koss headphones from years ago, and I wanted to hear what the Porta Pro was really about.

My first reaction was surprise.

By modern headphone standards, the Porta Pro is not going to win a specifications contest. It does not have the resolution, extension, isolation, or overall technical performance of much more expensive headphones. But that comparison almost misses the point. The Porta Pro is just fun to listen to, and I keep finding myself wanting to put it back on.

That may be the biggest compliment I can give a headphone.

I also really like what Koss has done with the Utility version. Keeping the basic Porta Pro design while making the cable detachable makes a great deal of sense. I can use the same headphone with a normal 3.5 mm connection, connect it directly to my iPhone with the USB-C Utility cable, or use the Bluetooth adapter. It takes a design that feels almost like something from the Walkman or Discman era and makes it genuinely useful with modern equipment.

The physical design still has that wonderfully retro character. It does not pretend to be a luxury headphone, and I would not want it to. Mine looks and feels like a slightly nicer version of the portable headphones I remember from years ago.

I do have a couple of minor criticisms. The Porta Pro is quite small, and getting the fit adjusted correctly took some getting used to. The hard case also feels tighter than I expected. Neither issue has stopped me from enjoying it, but they are worth mentioning.

What surprised me most is how little the price seems to matter once I start listening. I have headphones that cost many times the Porta Pro Utility's $59.95 price, and of course they can do things the Porta Pro cannot. But that does not make the Porta Pro irrelevant. It has its own personality and its own reason to exist.

I have enjoyed mine enough that I have already recommended the Porta Pro Utility to someone else.

For $59.95, this thing is better than it has any right to be.

Koss Listener 40 Years & Counting

My first pair of Koss headphones were the 1986 Radio Shack Realistic Pro 60. I bought my first PortaPro in 1987 to go with my Sony Walkman. Koss has a sound, the PortaPro is classic Koss. I use the PortaPro Utility with an iFi GoLink2 on my Android phone. The PortaPro is great for walking outside in a rural area. You get quality tunes while still being aware of your surroundings.

Great light and portable stereophones

Great light and portable stereophones. I wasn't certain about the durability of these, but they're holding up really well, and very comfortable. I don't feel my ears are confined or uncomfortable and the sound is crisp and clear for my purposes. I always adjust to slider to "light", not sure if it makes a huge difference on the pressure to temples but the adaptive adjustment of the band on my head is snug yet light.
